    The following collection of personal memoirs takes place over a timeframe of fifteen years. Each essay is a narrative account of actual life events. Some stories are the typical coming of age accounts, but end with a twist. Al the conclusion of each essay, there is a short summary of how each experience influenced my personal growth. All essays share the common theme of \u27\u27self-discovery. In order to show how these experiences contributed to this theme, the pieces have been arranged chronologically. This way, as you read you can see bow each event affects the next. For example, the story The Bridal Salon is about the excitement of getting married and planning a wedding, while at the same time shows the changing relationship between a mother and daughter. The next story, Long Distance Relationships displays how marriage can affect a changing friendship, and how the change is not always good but necessary. By the end of this collection the main character in these stories will have come full circle. In the next series of stories, the lead character will embark on the same journey we all take in our lives, just with a different twist. These stories show how each life-changing event creates who we are in the moment and who we are meant to be

    The paper that I wish to present is from my master’s thesis. It deals with Henry the II’s mistress Rosamond and how an author in the 16th century present her story. The author that I would talk about is Samuel Daniel and his writing The Complaint of Rosamond. He brings a unique viewpoint to the story of Rosamond and the trials and heartache that she went through while she was Henry’s II mistress. The real interest to me is the use of Greek mythology to help in the telling of Rosamond’s story. How did the use of the Gods change the meaning of the poems and how did it enhance them? The original story is from 1100’s and I explore the story as it is used in the 1500’s. I use the tales of all the referenced Myths to further explain how the Rosamond tale is supported and made more interesting. Daniels has Rosamond portray a ghost that will haunt him forever if he does not tell her tale. She wants to be absolved of her sins and allowed into Elysium where the King and Queen already are even thought they are the ones that made her into a sinner; the King by making her his Mistress and the Queen by forcing Rosamond to drink poison to kill herself. How do Rosamond and Daniel work together to put her story back into the world so that Rosamond can finally have the peaceful death that has been denied her for over 400 years?     Comparison of thruster configurations in attitude control systems

    Several aspects concerning reaction control jet systems as used to govern the attitude of a spacecraft were considered. A thruster configuration currently in use was compared to several new configurations developed in this study. The method of determining the error signals which control the firing of the thrusters was also investigated. The current error determination procedure is explained and a new method is presented. Both of these procedures are applied to each of the thruster configurations which are developed and comparisons of the two methods are made

    Flows and Non-thermal Velocities in Solar Active Regions Observed with the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer on Hinode: A Tracer of Active Region Sources of Heliospheric Magnetic Fields?

    From Doppler velocity maps of active regions constructed from spectra obtained by the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on the Hinode spacecraft we observe large areas of outflow (20-50 km/s) that can persist for at least a day. These outflows occur in areas of active regions that are faint in coronal spectral lines formed at typical quiet Sun and active region temperatures. The outflows are positively correlated with non-thermal velocities in coronal plasmas. The bulk mass motions and non-thermal velocities are derived from spectral line centroids and line widths, mostly from a strong line of Fe XII at 195.12 Angstroms. The electron temperature of the outflow regions estimated from an Fe XIII to Fe XII line intensity ratio is about 1.2-1.4 MK. The electron density of the outflow regions derived from a density sensitive intensity ratio of Fe XII lines is rather low for an active region. Most regions average around 7E10+8 cm(-3), but there are variations on pixel spatial scales of about a factor of 4. We discuss results in detail for two active regions observed by EIS. Images of active regions in line intensity, line width, and line centroid are obtained by rastering the regions. We also discuss data from the active regions obtained from other orbiting spacecraft that support the conclusions obtained from analysis of the EIS spectra. The locations of the flows in the active regions with respect to the longitudinal photospheric magnetic fields suggest that these regions might be tracers of long loops and/or open magnetic fields that extend into the heliosphere, and thus the flows could possibly contribute significantly to the solar wind.Comment: one tex file, 11 postscript figure file

    On the Relationship Between the Value Function and the Efficient Frontier of a Mixed Integer Linear Optimization Problem

    In this paper, we investigate the connection between the efficient frontier (EF) of a general multiobjective mixed integer linear optimization problem (MILP) and the so-called restricted value function (RVF) of a closely related single-objective MILP. We demonstrate that the EF of the multiobjective MILP is comprised of points on the boundary of the epigraph of the RVF so that any description of the EF suffices to describe the RVF and vice versa. In the first part of the paper, we describe the mathematical structure of the RVF, including characterizing the set of points at which it is differentiable, the gradients at such points, and the subdifferential at all nondifferentiable points. Because of the close relationship of the RVF to the EF, we observe that methods for constructing so-called value functions and methods for constructing the EF of a multiobjective optimization problem, each of which have been developed in separate communities, are effectively interchangeable. By exploiting this relationship, we propose a generalized cutting plane algorithm for constructing the EF of a multiobjective MILP based on a generalization of an existing algorithm for constructing the classical value function. We prove that the algorithm is finite under a standard boundedness assumption and comes with a performance guarantee if terminated early

    Mathematical Foundations of Complex Tonality

    Equal temperament, in which semitones are tuned in irrational ratios, is best seen as a serviceable compromise, sacrificing purity for flexibility. Just intonation, in which intervals are given by products of powers of 2, 3, and 5, is more natural, but of limited flexibility. We propose a new scheme in which ratios of Gaussian integers form the basis of an abstract tonal system. The tritone, so problematic in just temperament, given ambiguously by the ratios 45:32, 64:45, 36:25, 25:18, none satisfactory, is in our scheme represented by the complex ratio 1 + i : 1. The major and minor whole tones, given by intervals of 9/8 and 10/9, can each be factorized into products of complex semitones, giving us a major complex semitone 3/4 (1 + i) and a minor complex semitone 1/3 (3 + i). The perfect third, given by the interval 5/4 , factorizes into the product of a complex whole tone 1/2 (1 + 2i) and its complex conjugate. Augmented with these supplementary tones, the resulting scheme of complex intervals based on products of low powers of Gaussian primes leads naturally to the construction of a complete system of major and minor scales in all keys

    Assessing net energy consumption of Australian economy from 2004-05 to 2014-15: environmentally-extended input-output analysis, structural decomposition analysis, and linkage analysis

    This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of Australian net energy consumption between 2004–05 and 2014–15. Results from environmentally-extended input-output (EEIO) analysis show that the Transport sector has the largest direct effect on net energy consumption in industrial sectors, which decreased by about 35% for net energy consumption per million $AUD in the period. The Export sector has the largest direct net energy consumption while Households consumption results in the largest net energy consumption embodied in different categories of Final demand. The structural decomposition analysis (SDA) decomposes the change of net energy consumption into five drivers, in which net energy intensity mainly reduces Australian net energy consumption by about 8000 Petajoules, while the level effect of Final demand increases it by about 10,000 Petajoules. Analysis of forward and backward linkages highlights the Manufacturing sector as the key industrial sector with the largest energy consumption reduction potential via minor changes in its input and Final demand. This indicates that more attention should be given to the reduction of energy demand from the consumption patterns of Households consumption, the improvement of energy intensity, and the application of cleaner technologies in the Transport and Manufacturing sectors. The Australian Environmental-Economic Accounts is combined with Australian input-output tables to construct the EEIO tables for net energy consumption. The combination of economic and environmental data sets provides a depth of understanding their potential to inform environmental policy decisions. The novelty of the research is the combination of economic and energy data sets, the application of EEIO model, the implementation of the additive SDA method, and the use of forward and backward linkages for the Australian energy system
